How do I arrange proctored exams in my area?
Some D.E. classes require occasional visits to campus for exams or meetings. If you live outside Houston, you can ask the instructor for permission to have the exams proctored at a location in your area.
This brief guide explains how to request and arrange exam proctoring for the current and/or upcoming semester.
Note: If you are unable to come to campus for an exam due to a disability, contact the Center for Students with DisABILITIES.
Before you enroll
You must have written permission from your instructor stating your exams can be proctored at an off-campus location. The best time to get permission is before you enroll in the class. Some instructors will NOT allow students to take exams at an off-campus location. Therefore, it is prudent to find out before enrolling to avoid eventually needing to drop the course. (Permission can be granted via email.)
Once you have the instructor's permission
- Forward the instructor's permission to Distance Education Student Services at DEServices@uh.edu.
- Also send the names of at least three exam locations in your area with their phone numbers and website addresses. Educational facilities are preferred; however, libraries and other institutions can be used if your instructor approves. If you submit the name of a university that has multiple campuses (e.g. UH–Central, UH–Downtown), please specify which campus you prefer.
- After you submit the list of exam locations, the D.E. Student Services staff will contact each one to confirm the available services and gather any other pertinent information. If more than one location offers proctoring services, you will make the final decision on where you'd like to take your exams.
Note: If you already know that your preferred location offers proctoring services and is available to proctor your exam, you only need to submit contact information for that site. You do not have to submit other locations.
Finalizing arrangements
- Call and/or email the assigned proctor to schedule an appointment to take your exam.
- Send an email reminder of the upcoming exam to the instructor and/or program coordinator.
- Be prepared to pay any proctoring fees. Most institutions charge a proctoring fee ranging from $10-$35 which is due the date of the exam.
