Using Blackboard

In Spring 2010, Blackboard replaces WebCT as UH’s primary web-based course management system. For Fall 2009, 99% of UH courses have already switched to Blackboard.

Like WebCT, Blackboard is a web-based, interactive tool that UH instructors often use to deliver course information and material online. Your instructor may rely on Blackboard to communicate with you, deliver course materials, administer exams, or hold group sessions online. Blackboard is frequently used for DE classes, but instructors often use this tool as a supplement in traditional face-to-face classes on campus.

Blackboard is accessed through your web browser. It is easy to learn, and for students familiar with WebCT, it is very similar.

When you register for a class that uses Blackboard, you’re automatically entered into the Blackboard portion of the class.

If your class uses Blackboard:

  • Visit the Blackboard site and follow the instructions on the page.
  • Your login is your PeopleSoft ID, and initial password format is your birthdate as mmddyyx! where x is first initial of last name in lower case followed by an exclamation point.
  • On first log in, you will have to change your password and log in again with the new password.
  • If you registered before classes started, your Blackboard account will be active on the first day of classes. If you registered late, it may take 1-3 business days to set up your account.
  • Blackboard is accessed entirely through your web browser.
  • For assistance with Blackboard, try going to the Student Help section on the Blackboard site.
  • Beginning in Spring 2009, UH will move entirely to Blackboard from WebCT.

While most DE instructors utilize Blackboard, several math classes use CourseWare, several history classes use CourseCompass, and a few instructors will simply use their own site.

For additional help and support, visit the Student Help section of the Blackboard site, where you can have your questions answered by phone, e-mail, in-person, or live chat.
