Class Formats

At UH, there are several format options for DE classes, and each has specific requirements that might involve extra costs. Before registering for a DE class, determine the format and make sure you will be able to access the class. If you intend to enroll in multiple DE classes, prepare to receive course content in various formats.

UH offers classes through distance education via the following formats:

Classes you complete via the web, typically using Blackboard, another web-based course management system (i.e. CourseWare for several math classes and CourseCompass for several history classes), or an instructor’s site.

Hybrid icon for hybrid classes

Classes taught half of the time in a traditional face-to-face classroom, and the remaining time through other means, usually online.

Interactive Television (ITV)  icon for interactive television classes

Classes taught at UH with students participating via videoconference from off-site teaching centers in Houston and nearby suburban areas.

Some DE classes might require occasional visits to campus for exams or meetings. If you live outside Houston, contact the instructor to determine if the class you want requires exams or meetings on campus. The instructor has the option of waiving these meetings, allowing students to have their exams proctored at a location in your area.

Although most instructors will allow these circumstances, make sure that you ask the instructor for permission prior to registering for DE classes. While some instructors will handle proctoring duties themselves, others may utilize DE Student Services staff

Important information regarding Tape Purchase and Broadcast Courses (KUHT, HCCTV, and Cougar Cable)

In an effort to reduce student costs and enhance online course availabilities, UH will no longer offer classes delivered via tape purchase and/or broadcast (KUHT, HCCTV, and Cougar Cable) as of Fall 2009.

Courses offered via online, hybrid, interactive television (ITV), face-to-face classes at off-campus teaching centers will continue to be available for future enrollment. Many courses that were previously offered via tape purchase or broadcast, will instead be offered through other formats.
